In a significant step toward fostering sustainable energy, IIT Bombay and HSBC India have joined forces to promote innovative green hydrogen solutions. Under their joint initiative, six projects have been selected for incubation at IIT Bombay from proposals submitted by six IITs, the National Institute of Technology (NIT), and the Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER), reports ET Now.
The IIT Bombay-HSBC India Green Hydrogen Programme aims to accelerate the research and deployment of green hydrogen technologies, aligning with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. The initiative highlights the growing importance of green hydrogen in combating climate change and addressing critical challenges in energy transition.
The six shortlisted projects underwent a rigorous selection process by a steering committee comprising industry experts and senior faculty from IIT Bombay. These projects, which focus on areas such as production, storage, transportation, and utilization of green hydrogen, will receive incubation support at IIT Bombay until they are ready for commercial deployment.
“These projects present innovative solutions to key challenges in the green hydrogen ecosystem,” stated HSBC India. “From indigenous hydrogen storage systems that reduce carbon emissions in commercial vehicles to cost-effective hydrogen generators and alternative burners, these technologies aim to enhance air quality and foster sustainability.”
Hitendra Dave, CEO of HSBC India, emphasized the bank’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “Green hydrogen is essential for achieving a low-carbon economy. Our collaboration with IIT Bombay aligns with our global sustainability goals. The innovative ideas received through this programme reaffirm our belief in nurturing green hydrogen as a scalable and cost-effective solution.”
Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, highlighted the transformative potential of the initiative, saying, “This partnership with HSBC India reflects our dedication to supporting the government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. By promoting cutting-edge research, this collaboration aims to make India a global leader in green energy while contributing to energy independence and a cleaner future.”
The programme supports India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, unveiled in 2023 by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The mission aims to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030, expand renewable energy capacity by 125 GW, and significantly reduce carbon emissions, contributing to India’s net-zero goals.
