Bioenergy Association of Ukraine appeals support from International Biogas Community

Amid ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure and the approaching winter, the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine (UABIO) appealed for support from delegates at the WBA National Associations Roundtable meeting held in Birmingham this July. The request highlights an urgent need for decentralized energy solutions to ensure the country’s energy security and resilience, with biogas identified as a crucial technology to achieve this goal.

As per release, the WBA has agreed to promote UABIO’s appeal. We urge our members and the international biogas community to provide Ukraine with urgent aid in the form of surplus and second-hand anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas systems.

The letter from UABIO (fully posted below) outlines two main requests aimed at transforming and securing Ukraine’s energy landscape:

1. Support for Modular/Small Biogas Technology**: UABIO emphasizes the need to establish a network of biogas and biomethane plants. These facilities should be standardized, quick to install, cost-effective, and scalable. Creating such a network will significantly enhance energy resilience, reduce dependence on centralized systems, and promote sustainability through renewable energy sources.

2. Provision of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Systems**: UABIO requests assistance in supplying CHP generators that can utilize biogas, biomethane, and natural gas. These systems are vital for decentralized electricity production, offering a reliable and efficient energy supply. Standardized, containerized CHP units can be rapidly deployed near critical infrastructure, ensuring continuous energy provision even during disruptions.

By implementing these strategies, Ukraine aims to establish a more resilient and secure energy model, drawing on the expertise and support of other national biogas associations and equipment manufacturers. The full text of UABIO’s letter, included below, provides a detailed overview of their proposals and the expected benefits for Ukraine’s energy sector.
