India targets 100 GW wind capacity by 2030 as annual installations hit record 6.05 GW in 2025-26

India’s installed wind power capacity reached 59.20 gigawatts (GW) as of September 30, 2026, putting the country on track to achieve its target of 100 GW by 2030, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy through the Press Information Bureau (PIB).

Joshi made the remarks while inaugurating the eighth edition of ‘Windergy India 2026’ in Chennai. The three-day global wind energy conference is being held from October 7 to 9.

India recorded its highest-ever annual wind power addition of 6.05 GW in financial year 2025-26, and the government expects installations in financial year 2026-27 to exceed that level, Joshi said.

He said the continued expansion of wind capacity, supported by a strong project pipeline and policy framework, would help India scale up its wind energy sector and move towards the 100 GW target by 2030.

Tamil Nadu Energy Minister C T R Nirmal Kumar highlighted the state’s role in India’s wind energy development and the measures being taken to promote new projects, including a state repowering policy.

Windergy India 2026 has brought together around 400 exhibitors from more than 20 countries and 500 delegates, with country pavilions from Denmark, Germany and Spain.

Representatives from various state governments were also recognised for their efforts to facilitate land, provide timely clearances and address Right-of-Way (RoW) issues for wind projects.

Several international and domestic collaborations were announced at the event, including agreements involving the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA), the German Wind Energy Association (BWE), the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Two reports, titled “Energy Transition in Tamil Nadu” and “Reimagining Contractual Mechanism for Indian Wind Sector”, were also released during the inaugural session.

The government and industry stakeholders were encouraged to use the event to promote technology exchange, collaboration and partnerships, with a focus on strengthening India’s wind energy value chain and accelerating capacity deployment.
