BPCL commissions 5MW green hydrogen plant at Bina Refinery

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has taken a major step in India’s clean energy journey with the commissioning of a 5MW green hydrogen plant at its Bina Refinery in Madhya Pradesh. Virtually inaugurated on April 26, 2025, by BPCL Chairman and Managing Director G. Krishnakumar, the facility stands as one of the country’s largest green hydrogen initiatives.

This new plant shows BPCL’s commitment to the National Green Hydrogen Mission and India’s broader goal of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2070. With a production capacity of more than 780 tonnes per annum, the plant is poised to achieve an annual carbon emissions reduction of approximately 9,000 tonnes, significantly supporting India’s decarbonization journey.

Equipped with two advanced electrolysers, each with a capacity of 500 Nm³/hr, the facility has been designed for maximum energy efficiency. Completed in a record time of just 15 months, the project sets a new benchmark in cost-effectiveness and execution speed among India’s public sector oil marketing companies.

The commissioning of the Bina green hydrogen plant marks a significant milestone in BPCL’s strategy to achieve Net Zero in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2040. It also represents a broader move towards a sustainable, low-carbon energy future for India.

With the plant now operational, BPCL strengthens its position at the forefront of India’s clean energy transformation, contributing meaningfully to the nation’s decarbonization goals.
