Nel ASA has been awarded up to €135 million by the EU Innovation Fund to expand its production of advanced hydrogen-making machines. The money will help the company build more of its new pressurized alkaline electrolysers, which are key to making green hydrogen cheaper, reports FCW.
The grant will support Nel’s plan to increase production at its factories in Herøya, Norway. The company will initially aim to produce 1-2 gigawatts (GW) of these machines each year, with the possibility of increasing that to 4 GW if tests and sales go well. This expansion will also involve Nel investing its funds.
Håkon Volldal, the head of Nel, said the grant will make it much easier to bring their new technology to market. “We are working to make our current technology even better while also developing new technologies to help our customers lower the cost of green hydrogen,” he said.
The machines Nel is developing, called pressurized alkaline electrolysers, are better than older versions because they can quickly adjust to changes in renewable energy supply. They are also cheaper than another type of machine called PEM electrolysers because they don’t need expensive metals.
Nel has been making electrolysers for almost 100 years. They currently produce other types of electrolysers in Norway and the United States. With the EU’s support, Nel hopes to lead the way in making clean energy solutions by bringing these efficient and affordable machines to the world, solidifying their position as a leader in the hydrogen industry.
