Brahmapuram compressed biogas plant set to begin operations soon

Kochi: In a significant step towards improved solid waste management, the Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at Brahmapuram is gearing up to begin operations, reports The Times of India. The construction is expected to be completed by the end of March, with trial runs scheduled to start in the first week of April, according to sources.

Initially, the plant will be able to process 150 tonnes of biodegradable waste per day, with the capacity to expand to 300 tonnes daily. A senior official involved in the project said, “This is the first time such a large-scale decentralized plant with advanced technology is being established in the state.” He added, “The current capacity has been set at 150 tonnes per day, keeping in mind the availability of biodegradable waste.”

The plant is being constructed by BPCL Kochi Refinery on behalf of the city corporation. The corporation has allocated 10 acres of land within the solid waste treatment plant premises at Brahmapuram for the project. The compressed biogas produced will be sold by BPCL Kochi Refinery.

One of the key challenges during the trial run will be the availability of water. The plant will require approximately 100 million litres of water per day for operations. To address this, the corporation has suggested that BPCL source water from the Kadambrayar River, which flows near the waste treatment facility. However, concerns remain over the low water levels in the river, which could pose difficulties in ensuring an uninterrupted supply.
