DHL Express partners with Cosmo Oil to use sustainable aviation fuel in Japan

Tokyo: DHL Express has entered into a partnership with Cosmo Oil Marketing Co., Ltd. to integrate Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) into its operations in Japan. Starting in April 2025, the agreement will provide 7.2 million litres of SAF annually, marking the first use of this fuel for regular air cargo flights in Asia by an international express company.

The SAF will be produced by Saffaire Sky Energy LLC, a subsidiary of Cosmo Energy Holdings Co., Ltd., at its upcoming production facility, which is scheduled to begin operations in 2025. This collaboration ensures DHL Express has a reliable supply of SAF and reinforces its commitment to sustainable air transport in Japan.

Tony Khan, President of DHL Express Japan, highlighted the importance of the initiative, saying, “This partnership allows us to take a significant step toward reducing emissions in air transport. By adopting SAF produced in Japan, we can offer customers more environmentally friendly shipping options and contribute to a greener future.”

Koji Moriyama, President and CEO of Cosmo Oil Marketing, emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “We are proud to support DHL Express in its efforts to reduce carbon emissions. SAF is a critical solution for the aviation industry, and this collaboration is a meaningful step toward creating a more sustainable society.”

DHL Express currently uses SAF at airports across Europe, the United States, and the UK. With this agreement, Central Japan International Airport in Nagoya will become the first airport in Asia within DHL’s network to integrate SAF into its operations.

DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, launched in 2022, allows customers to offset emissions by using SAF. The service operates through a “book-and-claim” system, which enables customers to benefit from SAF regardless of where the fuel is used. This program is supported by global certifications to ensure transparency and accountability.

DHL Express is working toward achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The company’s measures include increasing the use of SAF, adopting electric delivery vehicles, and running carbon-neutral facilities.

This partnership with Cosmo Oil represents a significant step forward in DHL’s mission to promote environmentally sustainable logistics and reduce the aviation industry’s environmental impact.
