Odisha government signs agreement to introduce green hydrogen buses

Bhubaneswar: In a move to promote eco-friendly transportation, the Odisha government has signed a tripartite agreement to introduce green hydrogen buses in the state’s public transport system.

MoU was signed in front of Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo, Minister Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, CRUT, and NTPC with GRIDCO to bring in green hydrogen-powered buses in the city soon.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has focused on developing a net-zero carbon footprint in the future. This agreement is taking the first step towards bringing in green hydrogen buses,” said Deputy CM Singh Deo.

He said the partnership aims to implement innovative green energy technologies in Odisha, with a focus on transforming the public transport sector.

The MoU will remain in effect for five years. NTPC will handle hydrogen production, GRIDCO will ensure renewable energy supply, and CRUT will oversee the operations of the hydrogen-powered buses.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued ‘Scheme Guidelines for Implementation of Pilot Projects for Use of Green Hydrogen in the Transport Sector’ under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

The pilot project, supported by an investment of Rs 19.5 crore by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), is expected to enable a shift from fossil fuel-based buses to eco-friendly hydrogen-powered buses.
