New Delhi (India): A new bio-CNG plant is set to be established in Ghazipur to convert wet waste from local wholesale markets and nearby residential areas into clean transportation fuel, according to senior municipal officials, reported Hindustan Times.
This will be the second bio-CNG plant, following the one in Okhla, which is located next to an existing facility. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) approved an MoU with Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) on August 21.
The plant will utilize organic or wet waste to produce fuel gas. Unlike other ongoing projects, this bio-CNG plant in Ghazipur will not require approval from the standing committee, as IGL will cover the entire project cost, reported Hindustan Times citing senior official who wished to remain anonymous.
The MCD noted that the project will help reduce the waste currently being dumped at the overburdened Ghazipur landfill. The plant is expected to be operational within 18 months following the signing of the MoU.
Under the initial project plan, the MCD will provide the land, while IGL will handle the development and operation of the plant. “We will supply around 350 tonnes of fresh waste daily. This wet waste will be processed in digesters to produce compressed natural gas for fuel,” the MCD official explained.
The projected output from processing 100 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day includes 4,000 kg of compressed biogas, 15 tonnes of city compost, and 50 kilolitres of wet slurry. “The compost may be used by MCD in its nurseries, gardens, and green belts at an agreed cost or sold in the open market after quality enhancement,” the official added.
