Chamba to get Himachal Pradesh’s first green hydrogen mobility station

On Monday, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced the establishment of Himachal Pradesh’s first green hydrogen-based mobility station in Chamba after laying the foundation stone for the pilot project.

The green hydrogen mobility station in Chamba will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 14 crore, according to the statement.

Sukhu, who virtually presided over the closing ceremony of the International Minjar Fair from Shimla, also inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for several developmental projects valued at Rs 120.44 crore. The green hydrogen mobility station was one of these projects.

Sukhu highlighted that “Chamba will be the first district in Himachal Pradesh to launch such a project, marking the start of the green hydrogen initiative.”

The National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) will oversee the construction of this significant project, which is expected to be completed by August 2025. The station will be situated near NHPC’s Chamera-3 power station and will feature a 300-kilowatt grid-connected solar power plant to supply its energy needs. This plant is set to produce 20 kg of green hydrogen daily, stored at pressures of 450 bar or higher for use in a green hydrogen bus.

Additionally, a hydrogen dispenser unit will be installed to facilitate the refueling of the bus, Sukhu noted.

He emphasized that this pioneering project will introduce green hydrogen buses to the region for the first time, aiming to boost awareness of green hydrogen in one of India’s remote areas.

Sukhu also mentioned that NHPC has already initiated the tender process to acquire a green hydrogen bus for Chamba, ensuring its availability once the pilot project becomes operational.

The project is anticipated to generate revenue and create employment opportunities, contributing to the economic development of the region. The current state government aims to transform Himachal Pradesh into a ‘Green Energy State’ by March 31, 2026, focusing on green energy to meet demands and promoting green industry in line with this vision.
