India bars sugar-based ethanol from 2026-27 tender, cuts maize ethanol price

New Delhi: State-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) have excluded ethanol produced from sugarcane juice, sugar syrup and B-heavy molasses from their latest procurement tender for the 2026-27 supply year, as the government seeks to safeguard domestic sugar supplies while maintaining its nationwide ethanol-blended petrol programme, PTI reported.

The tender, issued by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) on October 16 on behalf of OMCs, seeks bids for approximately 11 billion litres of ethanol for the supply year beginning in November 2026 to support the target of 20% ethanol blending in petrol.

The procurement terms also reduce the price of maize-based ethanol to Rs68.86 per litre from Rs71.86 per litre, lowering the incentive for producers using maize as a feedstock.
