New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) plans to introduce ward-specific sanitation action plans and gradually reduce reliance on traditional community waste bins as part of measures to improve the city’s solid waste management system, Millennium Post reported.
MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar on Wednesday directed Zonal Deputy Commissioners to review sanitation facilities and arrangements in each ward. They have also been asked to identify waste-treatment facilities located within a 5–6 km radius that can process biodegradable waste through biogas, compressed biogas (CBG), composting and other technologies.
The civic body will use different waste-collection approaches depending on the characteristics of individual areas. Separate models will be implemented for residential societies, unauthorised colonies, narrow and congested streets, slums, hospitals, markets and institutional areas.
MCD will deploy smaller waste-collection vehicles in narrow lanes where larger vehicles cannot operate effectively. The corporation will also work towards reducing community bins and making markets free of such bins.
The plan also includes expanding night-time sweeping and mechanised cleaning operations as part of efforts to improve sanitation and strengthen waste collection and treatment across Delhi.
