Algeria and Germany are working to expand their energy partnership beyond oil and gas, with green hydrogen, green ammonia and other low-carbon technologies emerging as key areas of cooperation, S&S Insider reported.
Algerian State Minister and Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab held talks with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Tuesday, alongside senior officials and representatives of German companies including Bosch Energy, thyssenkrupp Uhde, VNG, Siemens Energy and FEV.
The discussions covered opportunities across hydrocarbons, petrochemicals, engineering, energy infrastructure and equipment manufacturing, as both countries seek to convert their growing bilateral ties into concrete industrial projects.
A major focus was the development and commercialisation of green hydrogen and green ammonia, including local manufacturing of equipment such as electrolysers. The two sides also discussed technology transfer, technical expertise, training and capacity building.
Cooperation is also being considered in methane emission reduction and recovery, advanced industrial technologies and increasing local content in Algeria’s energy and hydrocarbons industries.
Arkab highlighted the role German technology and expertise could play in Algeria’s priority projects, particularly in developing the country’s petrochemical industry. He said the hydrocarbons sector was ready to support German companies interested in investment opportunities in Algeria.
The Algeria Bid Round 2026 was also discussed as a potential avenue for greater German participation, alongside opportunities to introduce advanced technologies and industrial solutions into joint projects.
Wadephul described Algeria as a strategic and reliable energy partner and said German companies were interested in expanding their presence in the Algerian market. He also highlighted the SoutH2 Corridor, a proposed hydrogen corridor connecting North Africa with European markets, as an important area for future cooperation.
The meeting followed Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s official visit to Berlin on July 16-17, 2026, which has contributed to strengthening bilateral relations.
Both sides agreed to continue consultations, increase technology and expertise exchanges, expand specialised training and support joint projects focused on sustainable industrial development and reducing carbon intensity.
