Thailand: Bangkok airways expands sustainable aviation drive with SAF, green airports and low-carbon travel

Thailand’s Bangkok Airways is strengthening its sustainability efforts by expanding the use of environmentally friendly aviation practices, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), energy-efficient airport operations and waste reduction initiatives as part of its long-term low-carbon strategy.

The airline said it is integrating sustainability across its operations through its “Low Carbon Skies” programme, which includes Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) trials, environmentally designed regional airports, circular economy initiatives, energy-efficient infrastructure and the use of locally sourced ingredients for in-flight catering, Travel and Tour World reported.

The initiative aims to reduce the environmental impact of regional air travel while supporting Thailand’s long-term tourism goals.

Bangkok Airways has introduced sustainability measures at its regional airports, including Koh Samui Airport, Sukhothai Airport and Trat Airport, where environmental management has been incorporated into airport operations alongside passenger services.

The airline said the programme reflects a broader effort to combine premium travel experiences with environmentally responsible operations.

The expansion comes as the global aviation industry seeks to reduce carbon emissions while meeting growing passenger demand, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.

According to the International Air Transport Association, aviation accounts for around 2-3 per cent of global carbon dioxide emissions, while air travel demand across Asia-Pacific continues to grow.

Bangkok Airways has set a target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and is working to improve operational efficiency, reduce waste and increase the use of sustainable aviation technologies.

The airline said its investments in Sustainable Aviation Fuel, resource-efficient airport infrastructure and circular waste management are intended to support Thailand’s broader environmental objectives while maintaining passenger comfort and service standards.

The initiative also reflects a growing trend in the tourism sector, where sustainability is becoming an increasingly important part of the overall travel experience.
