LanzaJet secures $20 million financing to boost sustainable aviation fuel production

LanzaJet has secured at least $20 million in committed financing to ramp up sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production at its Freedom Pines Fuels facility in Georgia, supporting the company’s efforts to expand commercial output and increase deliveries to international customers, Aero News reported.

The funding will support the company’s next stage of commercial operations and help increase fuel production and deliveries to international customers, amid growing pressure on the aviation sector to reduce emissions and ensure reliable supplies of lower-carbon fuels.

Freedom Pines Fuels, which has an annual production capacity of 10 million gallons, is the world’s first commercial-scale alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) facility. The plant has already produced SAF and renewable diesel that meet ASTM specifications, demonstrating the technology’s ability to produce fuels in line with established industry standards.

LanzaJet’s ATJ technology converts ethanol into aviation fuel, providing an alternative route for SAF production. It can use ethanol from multiple sources, helping reduce reliance on specific feedstocks or geographical markets.

However, maintaining consistent commercial production remains a key challenge for SAF developers. Production costs, feedstock availability and customer demand must be balanced while competing with conventional jet fuel. Having production capacity alone does not ensure adequate supplies, particularly when eligible feedstocks are also sought by other industries.

The financing forms part of a recapitalisation and debt-reduction initiative supported by shareholders and investors. As part of the restructuring, LanzaTech will substantially increase its ownership of LanzaJet, giving it greater influence over the company’s commercial strategy.

LanzaTech Global, investor Vinod Khosla and LanzaJet’s board are backing the financing. Jennifer Holmgren, chief executive officer of LanzaTech, will continue as chair of LanzaJet’s board while taking on the role of interim chief executive officer at LanzaJet.
