Nippon Express and Nikon Expand SAF partnership to cut supply chain emissions

Nippon Express Co. Ltd. has signed an agreement with Nikon Corporation to provide air cargo transportation services using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), supporting Nikon’s efforts to reduce Scope 3 carbon dioxide emissions through the NX Group’s “NX-GREEN SAF Program.”

The agreement marks the second consecutive year of collaboration between the two companies under a project led by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Nippon Express was once again selected as a designated cargo agent for the “Project to Promote SAF Use in Air Cargo Transport for Corporate Compliance with Scope 3 Requirements,” which encourages businesses to adopt sustainable aviation fuel in their logistics operations, Biodiesel Magazine reported.

Nikon has renewed its participation in the initiative after first joining the program in fiscal year 2024, reaffirming its commitment to reducing emissions throughout its supply chain.

As part of its Long-Term Environmental Vision, Nikon is working to build a sustainable society by balancing environmental responsibility with business growth. The company is pursuing reductions in carbon emissions across Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 categories.

As Nikon’s long-term logistics partner, Nippon Express and the NX Group have supported these environmental goals through international transportation services while addressing logistics requirements through operational and sales structures tailored to Nikon’s needs. The partnership has enabled both companies to pursue solutions that combine environmental performance with logistics reliability.

Under the latest agreement, which covers air cargo shipments between May and December 2025, Nippon Express utilized the NX Group’s NX-GREEN SAF Program to issue carbon reduction certificates corresponding to the volume of Sustainable Aviation Fuel used for air freight shipments arranged on Nikon’s behalf. The initiative is intended to support Nikon’s ongoing efforts to lower Scope 3 emissions generated through transportation and logistics activities.

The NX Group has identified climate change action as one of its key sustainability priorities and has established group-wide emissions reduction targets for 2030. These include reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 50 percent from 2013 levels and lowering Scope 3 emissions by 25 percent from 2022 levels.

The company is also pursuing its long-term objective of achieving carbon neutrality across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2050. In June 2025, the NX Group’s 2030 emissions reduction goals received certification as short-term targets under the Science Based Targets (SBT) initiative.

Going forward, the NX Group said it will continue working with stakeholders to advance environmental conservation efforts and implement sustainability initiatives that support its long-term vision while helping customers reduce the environmental impact of their logistics operations.
