Compagas plans to invest 505 million reais (€86.6 million) from 2024 to 2029, as announced by Governor Carlos Massa Ratinho Junior on 24 June. The investment aims to expand operations across Paraná, particularly in Londrina, Maringá, and Lapa. It includes integrating biomethane into the gas network and creating sustainable corridors for natural gas and biomethane supply. These investments are outlined in Compagas’ new 30-year concession contract, effective from July, which focuses on increasing natural gas and biomethane supply and serving new regions in Paraná.
Governor Ratinho Junior highlighted Paraná’s potential to become a significant producer of biogas and biomethane, comparing it to Saudi Arabia in renewable energy generation. The state is a leader in these areas, with a substantial capacity in biogas generation from animal waste and biomass, particularly from sectors like sugar and alcohol.
Paraná boasts 426 biogas and biomethane plants, accounting for 67% of all such facilities in the Southern region, according to the International Center for Renewable Energy (Cibiogás).
