India’s energy sector grows with emphasis on ethanol, bioenergy: Minister Hardeep Puri

New Delhi: India’s energy sector is growing under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with emphasis on bio-energy, ethanol blending and reuse of waste, said Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday.

Speaking on the sidelines of India Energy Week (IEW) 2026, Puri said the government’s energy vision is clearly on display at the event, which highlights India’s progress in cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions, reports Lokmat Times.

He said the country has made strong advances in bio-fuels and waste-based energy projects over the past few years. According to Puri, IEW 2026 showcases higher levels of bio-fuel blending, closer linkage between compressed bio-gas and city gas networks, and steady growth in circular energy practices.

The minister said the event reflects the government’s focus on cleaner energy options while also improving the country’s energy security. He pointed out that the Bio-Energy, Ethanol and Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) Zone, hosted by Indian Oil Corporation, has become one of the key attractions at the event.

Puri said waste-based energy solutions are drawing particular attention, showing how farm residue, organic waste and other by-products are being turned into useful sources of energy.

He noted that ethanol blending in petrol has risen sharply from 1.53% earlier to 20% at present, calling it a major achievement. He said this change has helped cut India’s dependence on imported fuels, increased income for farmers and supported growth in rural areas.

The minister also said India now has 133 CBG plants producing about 926 tonnes of gas every day. He added that better integration of CBG with city gas distribution networks is helping expand the use of cleaner fuel for cooking and transport in both cities and villages.

According to Puri, IEW 2026 reflects India’s move towards a system where waste is treated as a valuable resource. He said such efforts are important for meeting climate targets while ensuring balanced and inclusive development.

India Energy Week 2026 is being held from January 27 to 30 at ONGC’s Advanced Training Institute in Goa. The event has brought together policymakers, industry leaders and experts to discuss and shape the future of India’s energy sector.
