Ola Electric receives govt certification for its 4680 Bharat Cell-powered Roadster X+ motorcycle

Ola Electric has announced that its flagship electric motorcycle, the Roadster X+ (9.1 kWh), featuring the company’s indigenous 4680 Bharat Cell battery, has received official approval under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR), 1989. The certification was granted by the International Centre for Automotive Technology (iCAT) in Manesar, a government-recognized testing authority.

Following this clearance, Ola Electric is set to commence deliveries of the Roadster X+ (9.1 kWh) across the country. This achievement marks a landmark moment in India’s electric two-wheeler industry, as it is the first electric motorcycle in the country to be certified with a fully in-house developed 4680 Bharat Cell battery pack.

The Roadster X+ (9.1 kWh) boasts an impressive range of up to 500 km, thanks to the advanced thermal management and high energy density of Ola’s homegrown battery technology. By significantly mitigating range concerns, Ola aims to expand electric motorcycle usage beyond metropolitan areas to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, where longer travel distances and limited charging infrastructure have traditionally hindered EV adoption.

Commenting on the milestone, an Ola Electric spokesperson said, “Government certification of the Roadster X+ is a pivotal step in our mission to develop end-to-end electric vehicle technology in India. The Roadster X+ (9.1 kWh) delivers unmatched range, top-tier performance, and superior safety and reliability, all powered by our proprietary battery technology. This represents a key advancement in accelerating EV adoption across India’s predominantly motorcycle-driven two-wheeler market.”

With this development, Ola Electric has now deployed its in-house 4680 Bharat Cell technology across its entire two-wheeler lineup, including both scooters and motorcycles.

The certification process involved extensive testing at the vehicle level, covering safety, electrical systems, performance, and environmental compliance, as mandated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for Battery Operated Vehicles (BoV) in the electric two-wheeler segment. The rigorous evaluation included construction and functional safety, range verification, gradeability, noise assessment, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and braking performance, ensuring the Roadster X+ meets stringent regulatory and safety standards.
