UK: Members of House of Lords set to begin a detailed examination of Sustainable Aviation Fuel Bill in committee stage

Members of the House of Lords are set to begin the committee stage of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Bill on Wednesday, 10 December, marking the start of a line-by-line examination of the legislation, reports Airportindustry-News.

The Bill seeks to establish a revenue certainty mechanism to support domestic production of sustainable aviation fuel. Under the proposal, a government-owned counterparty would be designated to oversee and manage contracts with SAF producers, providing longer-term financial stability and encouraging investment in UK-based fuel production.

During Wednesday’s session, peers will work through the Bill’s clauses in order, considering proposed changes, amendments to wording, and potential new provisions. Two days of committee scrutiny have been scheduled so far—10 December and 17 December.

On the first day of debate, members are expected to examine amendments related to rules and limits for revenue certainty contracts, the role of power-to-liquid fuels (SAF derived from non-biological sources), reporting requirements on UK sustainable fuel production and targets, as well as obligations for airline travel providers and the possible impact of SAF policy on air travel ticket prices.
