Kazakhstan, LanzaJet discuss partnership to build sustainable aviation fuel plant in Rudny

Astana: Kazakhstan is set to take a major step toward cleaner aviation fuel production, with Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov holding talks with LanzaJet CEO Jimmy Samarit and Vice President of Commercial Affairs Stefan Tion on setting up a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant in the country, reports Trend

The proposed facility will be built in Rudny, Kostanay region, and is designed to produce 54,000 tonnes of aviation fuel and process up to 100,000 tonnes of bioethanol annually. The project aims to bring advanced technology to Kazakhstan while supporting the nation’s green aviation and agriculture sectors. A feasibility study for the plant has already been completed.

LanzaJet, a subsidiary of U.S.-based bioengineering firm LanzaTech, produces SAF from ethanol derived from sources such as grains, corn, and potatoes. The upcoming project is expected to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and aligns with Kazakhstan’s environmental and energy goals.

Prime Minister Bektenov assured full government backing for the project, saying the initiative supports President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s vision of making Kazakhstan an international aviation hub with access to reliable, eco-friendly fuel.

LanzaJet is supported by several major global investors and airlines, including International Airlines Group, Shell, British Airways, Microsoft, ANA, and Airbus, and has long-term supply agreements with top carriers worldwide.
