Vadodara: Seven workers suffered burns on Friday evening after welding sparks ignited accumulated biogas at the Amul Dairy premises in Anand. The workers, employed by a contractor, were carrying out welding work near the biogas plant when the accident occurred, reports The Times of India.
“All seven were rushed to Shree Krishna Hospital in Karamsad. None are in critical condition. One worker has sustained major burns while six others suffered minor injuries. All are conscious and out of danger,” said Dr. Mayur Parmar, prant officer and sub-divisional magistrate of Anand.
Officials said treatment of the injured remains the immediate priority, while the cause of the incident will be probed.
Amul Dairy managing director Amit Vyas said the biogas balloon near the effluent treatment plant was undergoing annual maintenance at the time of the accident. “Preventive maintenance is carried out every year. Contractor workers were on the job, and the collected gas had already been extracted. We have reports that a spark triggered the accident. An investigation will establish the exact cause,” Vyas said, adding that the work was being done under a safety officer’s supervision.
