Dubai produces over 100 tonnes of green hydrogen since 2021

New Delhi: Dubai has produced more than 100 tonnes of green hydrogen since launching its flagship project in May 2021, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced. The milestone comes as the emirate works toward its target of meeting all energy needs from clean sources by 2050, reports The Indian Express.

According to DEWA, most of the hydrogen was used to generate over 1.15 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean electricity through a hydrogen gas engine, cutting more than 515 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, said more than 11 tonnes of hydrogen were delivered to the Emirates National Oil Company Group (ENOC) to fuel hydrogen-powered vehicles and support industrial use. “This project shows how clean energy can be used in different sectors, from transport to power generation, and helps us move closer to our long-term climate goals,” he said.

The Green Hydrogen project is the first in the Middle East and North Africa to produce hydrogen using solar power. It generates around 20 kilograms per hour and has storage tanks capable of holding up to 12 hours of production. The stored hydrogen can be used for power generation at night through a hydrogen motor that produces about 300 kilowatts of electricity.

The facility has also been designed to support future hydrogen applications in energy, transport, and industry.

Al Tayer said the project strengthens Dubai’s clean energy agenda, which includes the National Hydrogen Strategy, the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 plan, and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050. “It will also encourage the use of sustainable transport and help improve air quality in the city,” he added.

Dubai launched its Clean Energy Strategy in 2015, aiming to meet its energy needs entirely from clean sources by 2050 and to establish itself as a global hub for green growth. The plan rests on five main areas: infrastructure, laws, finance, training, and a balanced energy mix.

“Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said at the time that Dubai’s goal is to become the city with the smallest carbon footprint in the world by 2050.”
