Valmet, a global leader in technology solutions for the pulp, paper, and energy sectors, has secured a contract from Saica Group to supply a biomass boiler along with a flue gas cleaning system at Saica’s facility in El Burgo de Ebro, Zaragoza (Spain), according to the press release.
The order, recorded in Valmet’s second-quarter 2025 bookings, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
At the heart of the project is Valmet’s Bubbling Fluidised Bed (BFB) boiler technology, designed to produce over 700,000 tonnes of steam annually by utilizing biomass as fuel. This shift from fossil fuels to renewable biomass will significantly reduce carbon emissions, reinforcing Saica’s dedication to sustainability and the circular economy.
Juan Antonio Meler, Industrial Projects Director at Saica Group, said, “This initiative is a key part of Saica’s decarbonisation strategy and reflects our core values: ‘We Care, We Value, We Challenge’. It is backed by a PERTE grant from the Spanish Ministry of Industry and Tourism. We selected Valmet due to their proven expertise in biomass boiler technology and our positive track record with them in past collaborations. We are confident this partnership will ensure the successful delivery of this complex project.”
The scope of delivery includes the Valmet BFB boiler, auxiliary equipment, the boiler building, and a flue gas cleaning system featuring a bag house filter. Valmet will also oversee the installation, commissioning, and start-up phases.
Lauri Pehu-Lehtonen, Vice President of Energy and Circularity at Valmet, added, “We are proud to support Saica in their ambitious efforts to reduce carbon emissions. This contract underscores the important role of our advanced boiler technology in helping industries transition towards sustainable energy solutions. It also demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing innovative, high-performance solutions tailored to the evolving needs of our customers.”
