Biodiesel imports in US continue to fall in May: USDA

The United States exported 31,160.5 metric tons of biodiesel and biodiesel blends of B30 and above in May 2025, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA FAS) on July 3. While exports increased from 21,545.9 metric tons in April, they remained significantly lower than the 71,012 metric tons shipped during May 2024, reports Biodiesel Magazine.

Canada remained the largest destination for U.S. biodiesel exports in May, receiving 24,270.1 metric tons, followed by Peru with 6,328 metric tons, and Germany with 553.4 metric tons. In total, the U.S. exported biodiesel to four countries during the month.

The value of U.S. biodiesel exports for May was $32.4 million, up from $23.21 million in April but sharply down from $97.17 million recorded in May of the previous year.

From January through May 2025, total biodiesel exports reached 103,028.3 metric tons, valued at $123.61 million. This compares to 202,683.3 metric tons exported in the same period in 2024, which brought in $311.49 million in value—marking a significant year-over-year decline in both volume and revenue.

On the import side, the U.S. brought in 2,226.2 metric tons of biodiesel and B30+ blends in May, a decline from 4,417.3 metric tons in April and a sharp drop from 127,104.7 metric tons imported in May last year.

The value of biodiesel imports fell to $2.17 million in May, down from $3.78 million in April and far below the $169.41 million seen in May 2024.

For the first five months of 2025, total biodiesel imports stood at 53,522.8 metric tons, valued at $46.2 million, compared to 799,332.7 metric tons imported during the same period last year, valued at $1.11 billion.

The USDA FAS continues to monitor and report on trade trends, and more detailed data is available on its official website.
