Scandinavian Airlines to acquire 55 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has signed a major agreement to purchase 45 Embraer E195-E2 jets, marking its biggest direct order from an aircraft manufacturer in nearly three decades. The deal also includes purchase rights for 10 additional aircraft, bringing the total potential order to 55 jets. Valued at approximately US$4 billion (excluding purchase rights), this move supports SAS’ long-term plan to renew its fleet, reduce emissions, and expand its reach across Scandinavia and beyond, according to Embraer.

Deliveries of the aircraft are set to begin in late 2027 and will continue over a four-year period. The E195-E2 jets are expected to play a central role in improving the efficiency and flexibility of SAS’ operations, especially from its hub in Copenhagen, while also strengthening regional and international connections.

SAS President and CEO Anko van der Werff described the order as a “defining moment” for the airline. “The Embraer E195-E2 is a world-class aircraft, combining outstanding performance with excellent fuel efficiency and comfort,” he said. “This aircraft is key to enabling future growth and improved connectivity across Scandinavia and beyond.”

With its size and range, the E195-E2 will complement SAS’ current fleet and enable more frequent flights on key routes at lower operational costs. The aircraft is powered by Pratt & Whitney’s PW1900G engines, which offer notable reductions in fuel consumption, emissions, and noise compared to older models.

The aircraft also supports SAS’ goal of building a more environmentally friendly fleet. It has been successfully tested with 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and full certification for SAF use is expected in the future. Currently, it can operate on SAF blends of up to 50%.

Arjan Meijer, President and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation, welcomed the partnership. “The E195-E2 is the quietest single-aisle jet available today, with 29% better fuel efficiency and a 62% smaller noise footprint compared to its predecessor,” he said. “This aircraft will support SAS’ growth plans and enhance its operational performance.”

The agreement was supported by Skyworks Holding and marks another key step in SAS’ strategy to modernize its fleet and reduce its environmental impact while providing a better travel experience for passengers. The airline continues to invest in expanding its global and regional network, connecting more cities through smoother and more sustainable operations.

SAS was recently ranked the world’s most punctual airline, based on April and May 2025 data from Cirium, highlighting its ongoing focus on reliability and service excellence.
