TotalEnergies ENEOS and Imerys have successfully installed a 1-megawatt peak (MWp) solar rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system at Imerys’ calcium carbonate production plant in Ipoh, Malaysia. This marks Imerys’ first onsite solar initiative in Southeast Asia, following a similar installation in Wuhu, China in December 2024.
The system, comprising nearly 1,800 solar panels, is expected to generate around 1,400 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable electricity annually, which will cut down CO2 emissions by approximately 790 tons. This reduction is comparable to planting over 11,850 trees.
Guillaume Delacroix, Senior Vice President, Imerys Performance Minerals EMEA and APAC, said: “Imerys is committed to reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% by 2030 (from a 2021 baseline), in line with the 1.5°C target. The solar project in Ipoh is part of our broader strategy, including Power Purchasing Agreements at production sites worldwide, helping us achieve this ambitious goal.”
Prasanna Karandikar, Industrial Director, Imerys Performance Minerals APAC, emphasized: “Partnering with TotalEnergies ENEOS has allowed us to reduce energy costs without upfront investments or operational risks. This collaboration supports our goal of transitioning to sustainable energy sources in Asia Pacific. Our switch to solar power not only reduces our carbon footprint but also enhances the eco-profile of the products we offer, benefiting our entire value chain.”
Alexandru Buzatu, Director of TotalEnergies ENEOS Renewables Distributed Generation Asia Pacific, added: “We are proud to support Imerys on their first Southeast Asian solar project, assisting in their decarbonization efforts. This partnership reflects our dedication to delivering cost-effective and sustainable energy solutions. We look forward to future collaborations with Imerys.”
Under the 25-year Power Purchasing Agreement (PPA), Imerys does not need to make any upfront investments, leading to significant cost savings. TotalEnergies ENEOS fully funded, installed, and will operate the solar system, while Imerys will purchase the electricity generated for the duration of the PPA.
This solar project in Malaysia further strengthens Imerys’ commitment to improving energy efficiency and increasing its use of renewable electricity across its global sites.
Located northeast of Kuala Lumpur, the Ipoh calcium carbonate mine and its adjacent processing plant are Imerys’ largest operation in Southeast Asia. The site produces ground calcium carbonate sold to various markets throughout Asia Pacific. Notable products include Imerys’ FilmLink® for medical gowns and hygiene products, and ImerTouch™ GCC slurry for the latex glove industry. During the Covid pandemic, the Ipoh site played a crucial role in supplying essential ingredients to the region. The versatile ImerCarb® brand, used in applications such as plastics, rubber, paints, and adhesives, is also produced at the site.
