Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, praised India’s growing capacity for self-sufficiency in the energy sector.
On social media platform “X,” the Minister highlighted the ongoing expansion of refining capabilities at the Barauni, Panipat, and Gujarat refineries, noting that these expansion projects are progressing rapidly.
Sharing a video of the current work, the Minister pointed out that the installation of large and complex equipment has become routine in the country’s energy sector.
In his post, he stated, “Everything is falling into place for India’s extraordinary journey towards achieving energy self-sufficiency under the leadership of PM @narendramodi Ji. With the expansions at the Barauni refinery (from 6 to 9 MMTPA), Panipat refinery (from 15 to 25 MMTPA), and the Gujarat Refinery (from 13.7 to 18 MMTPA) in full swing, the installation of heavy, complex equipment weighing hundreds of tonnes has become a common sight in our energy sector. These major expansions position @IndianOilcl to significantly increase its crude processing capacity and meet India’s energy demands in the near future.”
Indian Oil is enhancing the refining capacities at Barauni, Panipat, and Vadodara in Gujarat.
The company is investing Rs 14,800 crore to expand the Barauni refinery’s capacity from 6 million tonnes per year to 9 million tonnes.
The Panipat refinery’s capacity is set to increase from 15 million tonnes per year to 25 million tonnes per year, and a new 450,000 tonne per year polypropylene (PP) plant is also under construction. Indian Oil has announced that the Panipat project will now be completed by December 2025, revised from the previous target of September 2024.
The Gujarat refinery expansion, which will raise its capacity from 13.7 million tonnes per year to 18 million tonnes, involves an investment of Rs 17,825 crore.
According to information on the IOC website, the company is currently undertaking 2,814 projects with a total investment of Rs 2,05,100 crore.
