Oil India and Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation partner on green hydrogen plant in Baddi

Oil India Limited (OIL) is building a 1MW (400 Kg/day) capacity Green Hydrogen Plant at Baddi, Himachal Pradesh in collaboration with Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL). Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power, Shripad Yesso Naik, announced this in Rajya Sabha.

Naik confirmed that the central government has not yet sanctioned any projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission in Himachal Pradesh. However, he noted that both Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL) and OIL have independently initiated green hydrogen projects in the state.

In 2023, SJVNL launched India’s first multi-purpose green hydrogen pilot project at its Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station in Himachal Pradesh, a 1,500 MW facility. The Himachal Pradesh government has also included provisions for promoting green hydrogen energy storage in its 2021 Energy Policy, Naik added.

Naik further highlighted that the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to position India as a global hub for the production, use, and export of green hydrogen, was approved by the Union Cabinet in January 2023. The mission has an overall budget of Rs 19,744 crore.

The project in Baddi marks a significant step toward advancing India’s green hydrogen capabilities, with both public and private sector companies investing in clean energy solutions.
