NORDEN and BHP have established a partnership to utilize a low CO2 emission biofuel arrangement, involving approximately 1,000 metric tons of 100% biofuel (B100) for a journey from Hay Point, Australia, to Rotterdam, Netherlands, aboard the Capesize vessel NORD Steel, reported Biodiesel Magazine.
This represents the largest volume of biofuel ever used by NORDEN on a single voyage, projected to cut CO2 emissions by 2,500 metric tons compared to a similar trip using traditional fossil fuels. This reduction is comparable to taking 543 fossil-fueled vehicles off the road for an entire year.
Sarah Greenough, BHP’s Head of Maritime, commented, “Since our first biofuel trial in 2021, we have integrated biofuel blends into the fuel mix for certain voyages on our key shipping routes. We are thrilled to collaborate with partners like NORDEN in our efforts to decarbonize supply chain emissions.”
Jan Rindbo, CEO of NORDEN, emphasized, “BHP is leading the way in accelerating shipping decarbonization, and we are proud to support them in reducing supply chain emissions. Biofuels are crucial to our goal of decarbonizing our customers’ supply chains, as they can be used on our fleet of over 500 vessels without requiring any engine modifications, providing immediate benefits.”
NORDEN made history in 2018 as the first shipping company to carry out a commercial shipment using B100. Since then, the company has been at the forefront of biofuel adoption, recently investing in biooil scale-up producer MASH Makes and launching the NORDEN Book & Claim initiative, which connects the emission reductions achieved by NORDEN with customers unable to use low-carbon fuels due to trading routes or other limitations.
