Mumbai: Mumbai recorded a sharp rise in electric vehicle (EV) adoption in 2025–26, with registrations increasing by 23%, outpacing the overall growth in Maharashtra, which stood at 14%, according to transport data, The Free Press Journal reported.
The increase was seen across key Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in the city, reflecting a broader shift towards cleaner mobility. The Tardeo RTO reported registrations rising from 5,259 in 2024–25 to 6,597 in 2025–26. RTOs in Andheri and Wadala also posted strong numbers, each crossing 5,900 registrations during the year, according to The Times of India.
Overall EV registrations in Mumbai grew from 18,844 units in the previous year to 23,186 units in 2025–26, indicating a rising preference for cost-effective and environment-friendly transport. The Borivali RTO also recorded steady growth.
At the state level, Maharashtra continued to expand its EV base, with total registrations reaching 2,95,341 in 2025–26, up from 2,59,000 a year earlier.
Data showed that electric two-wheelers remained the largest segment, accounting for 76% of total registrations at 2,25,227 units. However, this share declined from 82% last year, pointing to growing interest in electric cars and commercial vehicles.
Experts said the rise in EV adoption has been driven by supportive policies and better infrastructure. Measures such as simplified rules and standard procedures have made it easier for housing societies to install charging stations, helping remove a key barrier.
With total EV numbers in Maharashtra crossing 10.2 lakh, up from about 31,000 in 2019, the state is steadily moving towards a cleaner transport system.
