Malaysia well-positioned to establish itself as regional leader in development and production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Geneva: Malaysia is emerging as a regional leader in the development and production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), driven by government-backed initiatives, policy enhancements, and support from global aviation bodies. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) highlighted Malaysia’s potential, citing its strategic position as the world’s second-largest palm oil producer and its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

According to Hemant Mistry, IATA’s director for energy transition, Malaysia’s shift toward SAF is aligned with its broader climate goals spearheaded by the Climate Change Action Council. Key to this effort is the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which aims to accelerate energy transformation and foster a high-value green economy.

“The recent launch of the Malaysia Aviation Decarbonisation Blueprint (MADB) is a significant step toward building an inclusive SAF ecosystem,” Mistry said during the IATA Global Media Day 2024. The blueprint promotes a “whole-of-government and whole-of-society” approach, encouraging collaboration across sectors to meet climate action targets.

Efforts to boost SAF production have also received support from Malaysia’s Ministry of Plantation and Commodities. The ministry is in discussions on tax incentives to attract foreign investment and facilitate the growth of SAF production facilities.

Mistry emphasized that targeted incentives and policies aimed at transitioning existing renewable diesel facilities to SAF production would be crucial. These measures would not only enhance production capacity but also draw private sector investment to leverage the region’s sustainable feedstock resources.

The Ministry of Plantation and Commodities is working with the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) to develop a national strategy for SAF production and consumption. This strategic plan is intended to establish Malaysia as Southeast Asia’s leading SAF producer.

Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, the Minister of Plantation and Commodities, said Malaysia’s position as a major palm oil producer gives it a strategic advantage in becoming a global leader in SAF production. The move is seen as essential to supporting the goals set out in the MADB and Malaysia’s broader green energy ambitions.

Further strengthening Malaysia’s SAF credentials, state-owned energy giant Petronas plans to establish the country’s first SAF production facility by 2028. The facility is expected to play a vital role in meeting the growing regional demand for SAF, cementing Malaysia’s status as a key player in the global shift toward sustainable aviation.
