Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, stated on Saturday that India is leading the world in the field of green hydrogen.
During a visit to a floating solar plant at the Omkareshwar Dam in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district, the minister announced that the Union government has issued a tender for the world’s largest green ammonia demonstration project.
He further highlighted that work on offshore wind power projects is already underway, with tenders being invited in Gujarat. “Offshore wind power involves installing wind turbines at sea, which requires upgrading port facilities and transmission infrastructure. Additionally, progress is being made on geothermal energy projects, though they are still in the early stages,” Joshi explained.
Joshi also emphasized that India is witnessing a revolution in solar energy and is on track to become a global leader in renewable energy.
“India is ahead of the world in green hydrogen development. We’ve launched the world’s largest green ammonia project through a tender,” he noted.
The floating solar plant at Omkareshwar Dam, which has a capacity of 278 megawatts, is a unique project that supplies power to Delhi Metro. The minister expressed his vision of replicating such projects across the country, saying, “While there is potential to generate 90 gigawatts of power from similar projects, very little has been done so far.”
Joshi urged officials and leaders from other states, particularly those with large dams, as well as energy experts, to visit the site and explore the possibility of replicating the project elsewhere. He emphasized that such initiatives would be crucial in meeting India’s target of generating 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel energy by 2030 and 1,800 gigawatts by 2047. “While India requires more electricity, it should come from sustainable sources,” the minister concluded.
