Jakarta: Indonesia aims to complete the nationwide rollout of B50 biodiesel fuel at all fuel stations by Oct. 1, 2026, as the government accelerates its biofuel programme to reduce emissions and strengthen energy security.
The mandatory B50 biodiesel programme, which began on July 1, is being implemented in phases over a three-month transition period to allow fuel suppliers to exhaust existing B40 stocks and adjust blending operations, Eniya Listiani Dewi, Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, said on Monday, Antara News reported.
“The target is to achieve full B50 distribution at all gas stations by October 1,” she said.
The government will conduct a comprehensive review in December to assess the transition and determine whether all fuel suppliers have successfully adopted the higher biodiesel blend.
According to the ministry, about 57% of fuel stations across the country are already supplying B50 fuel, with the share expected to increase steadily during the transition period.
Indonesia officially launched the mandatory B50 programme in July, becoming the first country in the world to require diesel fuel to contain 50% biodiesel. The mandate builds on the country’s earlier B30, B35 and B40 blending programmes, which have been implemented over the past decade.
The government estimates that the B50 programme will cut greenhouse gas emissions by around 44.46 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2026, while also reducing dependence on imported diesel.
The higher biodiesel blend is also expected to generate foreign exchange savings of around Rp170 trillion (about $9.1 billion) by reducing fuel imports, increase the value addition of crude palm oil (CPO), and support around 2.1 million jobs, according to the ministry.
Indonesia has been steadily increasing its biodiesel blending mandate as part of its strategy to expand the use of renewable fuels, support the domestic palm oil industry and improve energy self-sufficiency.
