India’s total installed solar capacity stood at 162.15 GW as on June 30, 2026, marking a nearly 57-fold rise from 2.82 GW recorded in 2013-14, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy informed the Lok Sabha.
In a written reply to a Starred Question raised by Dr. Shrikant Eknath Shinde and Smt. Bharti Pardhi, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said India is now the third-largest country in the world in terms of installed solar capacity, citing the International Renewable Energy Agency’s Renewable Energy Capacity Statistics 2026 report.
The minister said 56 solar parks with an aggregate capacity of 39,461 MW have been sanctioned across 14 states under the scheme for Development of Solar Parks and Ultra Mega Solar Power Projects, of which 18,919 MW has already been commissioned. These parks provide land, power evacuation facilities, roads and water infrastructure to help developers set up projects with fewer implementation hurdles, according to the reply.
On domestic manufacturing, the government said letters of award have been issued under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High Efficiency Solar PV Modules for setting up about 48.3 GW of integrated manufacturing capacity spanning polysilicon, ingot-wafer, cell and module production. Around 42 GW of module, 11.5 GW of cell and 2 GW of ingot-wafer capacity has been set up so far, including 3.4 GW of fully integrated thin-film capacity, with investments of about Rs 73,400 crore made under the scheme as on June 30, 2026, the ministry said. Citing Department of Commerce data, the reply added that solar module imports fell from around USD 4,354 million in FY 2023-24 to about USD 994 million in FY 2025-26.
On the rooftop segment, the ministry said 47.26 lakh households have benefited so far under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in February 2024 with a target of covering one crore households, helping cut distribution losses and daytime peak demand on the grid.
Of the total 162.15 GW installed as on June 30, 2026, the ministry said 125.60 GW comprises utility-scale projects, 30.11 GW is from rooftop installations and 6.43 GW from off-grid systems, a mix it described as reflecting balanced growth across large-scale renewable targets and grassroots energy access.
