New Delhi: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh on Thursday said India is steadily positioning itself as a major global player in clean energy, backed by policy support, technological progress and growing industry involvement, ANI reported.
Speaking at the World Hydrogen Energy Summit held alongside the World Petrocoal Congress in New Delhi, the minister said the country is pursuing a balanced approach to energy transition by combining sustainability with energy security.
He noted that India is advancing multiple clean energy streams, including green hydrogen, nuclear power and renewable energy, while also building domestic capabilities in critical technologies such as electrolysers.
Highlighting the need for collaboration, Singh said scaling up clean energy efforts would require strong public-private partnerships, along with increased investment in research and innovation.
He said India is also expanding its conventional energy base, targeting nearly $100 billion in oil and gas investments, increasing exploration areas and aiming to raise the share of natural gas in the energy mix to 15 per cent.
On clean energy initiatives, he pointed to the National Green Hydrogen Mission, with an outlay of ₹19,744 crore, as a key step towards building an alternative fuel ecosystem. The mission is expected to support efforts to cut emissions in sectors such as steel and cement.
The minister also highlighted progress in nuclear energy, saying the Nuclear Energy Mission aims to achieve 100 GW capacity by 2047. He added that India plans to develop five small modular reactors by 2033, with work already underway on three indigenous designs, stated ANI.
Singh said recent policy reforms have opened the nuclear sector to private participation, encouraging startups and industry players to contribute to clean energy growth.
He added that emerging sectors such as electric mobility, battery recycling, grid management and renewable manufacturing are expected to create new opportunities for jobs and innovation.
According to the minister, India’s policy direction, technological progress and demographic strength position it to play a major role in global efforts to reduce emissions while ensuring sustainable growth and energy access.
