In a written reply in Lok Sabha, Minister of State in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Suresh Gopi, highlighted that since its inception, the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA) has garnered extensive global support, expanding its current membership to 24 member countries and 12 international organizations, with ongoing growth anticipated.
GBA was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi alongside leaders from the USA, Brazil, Italy, Argentina, Singapore, Bangladesh, Mauritius, and UAE on September 9, 2023, during the G20 Summit in New Delhi as part of the Chair’s initiative.
GBA serves as a multi-stakeholder alliance encompassing governments, international organizations, and industries, uniting major consumers and producers of biofuels. Its objectives include facilitating capacity-building, providing technical support for national programs, sharing policy insights, advancing technology, and implementing internationally recognized standards and codes through broad stakeholder participation. To date, three meetings of the Temporary Executive Committee (TEC) of GBA have been convened, defining initial initiatives such as the Biofuels Workshop series and Biofuels Country Landscapes (Policy Framework).
Furthermore, GBA has bolstered its global presence by actively participating in international forums such as COP28 (Dubai), World Economic Forum (Switzerland), India Energy Week 2024, and World Biogas Summit 2024 (UK). GBA was also invited as an International Organization to the Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) meeting under the G20 presidency of Brazil and the International Forum on Sustainable Biofuels during the Italian G7 Presidency.
GBA aims to provide Indian industries additional opportunities by positioning India as a knowledge base and production hub for biofuels, including ethanol, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and Compressed Bio Gas (CBG). Active participation in GBA enhances India’s stature in the global biofuels sector.
