Maruti Suzuki to invest Rs 150 crore in biogas expansion, set up new plant at Kharkhoda

Gurgaon: Automaker Maruti Suzuki India Limited has announced plans to strengthen its renewable energy initiatives with a Rs 150 crore investment in biogas infrastructure, including a new plant at its Kharkhoda facility and the expansion of its existing biogas unit in Manesar.

The company will establish a new biogas plant with a processing capacity of 10 tonnes per day at Kharkhoda while scaling up operations at its Manesar facility as part of its broader efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, The Times of India reported.

Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the company has been consistently pursuing measures to lower fossil fuel consumption across its operations.

“Maruti Suzuki has been consistently working on initiatives aimed at reducing fossil fuel consumption. In line with this, we are setting up a new 10 tonnes-per-day biogas plant at the Kharkhoda facility as well as expanding the existing biogas plant at Manesar facility,” Takeuchi said.

The announcement comes at a time when energy security has gained increased attention amid supply concerns arising from ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Companies across sectors are exploring alternative and renewable energy sources to improve energy resilience and reduce exposure to fossil fuel market volatility.

Takeuchi said the biogas projects align with the national objective of reducing dependence on conventional fuels and increasing the use of cleaner energy sources.

“As the Prime Minister has called for reducing dependence on fossil fuels, the commissioning of our biogas project comes at an appropriate time. It enables us to contribute, in a modest but meaningful way, to the current national priority alongside several other ongoing efforts,” he said.

The investment reflects the growing role of biogas in India’s clean energy transition, with industries increasingly adopting bioenergy solutions to lower carbon emissions, improve waste management and enhance energy sustainability.
