Mumbai: A major bioenergy project is set to take shape in Mumbai after Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) signed an agreement to begin implementation of the first phase of a Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at Mankhurd.
The agreement, signed on June 1, formally launches the development of the facility, which will have the capacity to process 350 tonnes of organic waste per day and convert it into renewable compressed biogas, The Times of India reported.
Under the project, municipal organic waste collected exclusively from designated hotels, vegetable markets and kitchen waste generators across Mumbai will be used as feedstock for biogas production.
The initiative is expected to support the city’s efforts to convert urban waste into clean energy while reducing the volume of organic waste sent to disposal sites.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Mahanagar Gas Limited said the signing of the concession agreement marks the start of project implementation activities and paves the way for the establishment of one of Mumbai’s key green energy projects.
The company said the facility will play an important role in advancing sustainable waste management practices while contributing to the production of renewable energy from municipal waste streams.
The Mankhurd plant is expected to strengthen Mumbai’s growing bioenergy infrastructure by transforming organic waste generated within the city into compressed biogas, a cleaner fuel that can be used as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels.
