Germany and Morocco are forging a joint alliance focused on climate and energy issues, as highlighted in a news release from the German Development Ministry (BMZ). The alliance aims to enhance collaboration in climate adaptation, expand renewable energies, and promote the production of green hydrogen. According to the release, Morocco’s advantageous geographical location along the windy Atlantic coast and proximity to desert regions positions it favorably for generating electricity from wind and solar power. This capability not only meets domestic energy needs but also sets the stage for exporting green hydrogen to Germany in the future.
The partnership builds upon prior successful cooperation, such as the construction of the world’s largest solar thermal power plant in Ouarzazate, southern Morocco, supported by the BMZ. This plant currently provides electricity to approximately 1.3 million people. Morocco’s next strategic step involves initiating green hydrogen production, following its established hydrogen strategy from two years ago. Leveraging solar power plants and wind farms, Morocco aims to scale up sustainable green hydrogen production and foster the growth of green economic sectors.
Germany is actively involved in constructing Morocco’s first green hydrogen production reference plant, slated for completion in the coming years. The plant is projected to produce around 10,000 metric tons of hydrogen annually, enough for manufacturing 50,000 metric tons of green steel. This initiative aims to demonstrate the economic viability of green hydrogen production in Africa and bolster private investor confidence in Morocco’s potential as a strategic location.
German Federal Development Minister Svenja Schulze emphasized the importance of fair partnerships in the green hydrogen economy, underscoring mutual benefits for both Germany and Morocco. She stressed the need for cooperation that supports Morocco’s energy transition and ensures equitable participation in future economic value chains. Parliamentary State Secretary Stefan Wenzel highlighted Morocco and Germany’s regional leadership in climate protection and the transition from coal-fired power to renewable energies.
