Adani Green increases operational BESS capacity to 6.63 GWh, crosses 50% of India’s operational capacity

New Delhi: Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) has increased its operational Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity to 6.63 gigawatt-hours (GWh), up from 3.55 GWh in June 2026, giving the company more than half of India’s operational BESS capacity, ANI reported.

AGEL said its operational storage capacity accounts for over 50% of India’s total operational BESS capacity of around 12.6 GWh, based on Central Electricity Authority data as of August 31, 2026, and industry disclosures.

The latest BESS capacity has been commissioned at Khavda in Gujarat, where AGEL is developing a 30 GW renewable energy project spread across 538 square kilometres. The company said the 6.63 GWh installation makes Khavda the world’s largest operational battery energy storage facility at a single location.

AGEL reached the milestone within 14 months of starting on-site construction of its BESS facilities at Khavda. The latest capacity addition was commissioned within 10 months of construction beginning.

According to the company, the storage system can hold enough clean energy to meet the daily electricity needs of around two million homes and support peak demand in cities such as Nagpur, Patna or Vizag for several hours. Its storage capacity is also equivalent to more than 1,50,000 mid-sized electric vehicles equipped with 40 kWh battery packs.

“Reaching 6.63 GWh of operational battery storage in just 14 months is a significant milestone for AGEL and India’s clean energy transition. At this scale, storage can make renewable power firmer, more reliable and dispatchable when the grid needs it,” said Sagar Adani, Executive Director, Adani Green Energy.

He said the company would continue expanding battery and pumped storage solutions as India’s electricity demand increases, with the aim of supporting a more resilient and lower-carbon power grid.

The BESS facility uses lithium-ion battery technology along with an Energy Management System and automated telemetry. These systems enable the batteries to manage charging and discharging, optimise performance and provide grid services.

AGEL said battery storage can contribute to grid stability, help manage peak electricity demand, reduce renewable energy curtailment and make clean power available for dispatch when required.

The company is targeting the addition of more than 10 GWh of BESS capacity in FY27 and aims to reach 50 GWh over the next five years. It is also developing pumped storage projects as part of its broader strategy to increase firm and dispatchable renewable power capacity, according to ANI.
