India is making significant strides towards achieving its goal of 20% ethanol blending in petrol, with the country on track to meet this target. The Ethanol Blending Program (EBP) has seen impressive growth, with ethanol blending in petrol reaching 19.6% in January 2025. The cumulative ethanol blending from November 2024 to January 2025 has reached 17.4%, marking the highest blending percentage to date.
In the ongoing Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2024-25, Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) oil marketing companies (OMCs) received 91.7 crore liters of ethanol in January 2025, bringing the total ethanol supply from November 2024 to January 2025 to 200.8 crore liters. Official data reveals that the total ethanol blended in January 2025 alone amounted to 82.1 crore liters, bringing the cumulative total to 222.9 crore liters over the same period.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) reports that under the EBP program, ethanol supplies have dramatically increased from 38 crore liters in ESY 2013-14 to 707.4 crore liters in ESY 2023-24, achieving an average blending of 14.6%. The government has set a target of 20% ethanol blending by 2025, requiring approximately 1,016 crore liters of ethanol, totaling 1,350 crore liters when accounting for other uses.
This push for increased ethanol blending is part of the Indian government’s broader initiative to reduce dependence on imported fuel and promote sustainability.
