Hy2gen becomes first RFNBO-certified German e-methane producer

Hy2gen Deutschland GmbH, the German arm of global renewable hydrogen producer Hy2gen, has achieved a significant milestone. Its ATLANTIS facility in Werlte has become the first site in Germany to receive CertifHy certification for producing e-methane that meets the European Union’s Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) standards.

The certification confirms that the ATLANTIS plant complies with all EU criteria related to sustainability, traceability, and lifecycle emissions. Its certified e-methane supports industrial decarbonization goals and helps clients meet regulatory obligations under EU climate policies.

Hy2gen took over the ATLANTIS plant in 2023 and has since succeeded in making renewable hydrogen production commercially viable at the site. As the demand for green hydrogen and its derivatives grows across Europe, the company is planning a significant upgrade: additional polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolysers are set to be installed by the end of 2025.

Matthias Lisson, Managing Director of Hy2gen Deutschland GmbH, commented, “We are proud to be among the first globally to produce certified RFNBO hydrogen and e-methane. E-methane, in particular, holds enormous potential for the maritime sector due to its compatibility with existing infrastructure. Our team in Werlte is leading the way—we are currently operating the largest e-methane production facility in the world. With this certification, our clients can be confident that our fuels are fully renewable and compliant with EU decarbonization standards.”

As part of its expansion strategy, Hy2gen has also secured a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with a German hydropower provider, ensuring the future supply of additional renewable electricity to the ATLANTIS facility. This will enable the company to scale up electrolysis capacity and increase the availability of certified green fuels for both European and global markets.

The certification and planned expansion of the ATLANTIS plant align with Hy2gen’s broader goal to develop industrial-scale RFNBO production facilities across its international portfolio.
