Volotea signs MoU with TotalEnergies for 7.5m litres of SAF by 2029

Volotea, the European low-cost airline, has signed a new agreement with energy company TotalEnergies for the supply of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for its flights departing from French airports, reports Airline Routes Ground Services (ARGS).

The agreement outlines the airline’s plan to purchase up to 7.5 million litres of SAF between 2025 and 2029, which will help Volotea reduce the carbon emissions of its operations in France.

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), pure SAF can lower CO₂ emissions by up to 90% over its entire lifecycle when compared to conventional fossil-based jet fuel. SAF is usually blended with standard kerosene before being used in aircraft and is compatible with existing infrastructure and engines.

The fuel supplied under this agreement will be made from waste products, including used cooking oils and animal fats, making it a cleaner alternative that doesn’t require changes to aircraft systems.

Carlos Muñoz, Founder and CEO of Volotea, said the partnership marks a meaningful step in the airline’s sustainability efforts. “This agreement with TotalEnergies strengthens our commitment to more sustainable aviation and supports the goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of government incentives to support greater use of SAF. “France is progressing in SAF infrastructure, but we need a system that encourages all players in the industry to invest in sustainable fuel, research, and large-scale production,” Muñoz added.

Volotea has launched several initiatives in recent years to reduce its environmental footprint. In 2024, the airline reported a 47% reduction in direct CO₂ emissions per passenger-kilometer compared to 2012 levels—bringing it close to its target of a 50% reduction by 2030, which it may reach as early as 2025.

Louise Tricoire, Senior Vice President of Aviation & Marine Fuels at TotalEnergies, said the company is proud to support Volotea’s sustainability goals. “This agreement shows how we can help our partners transition to cleaner energy and contribute to a more sustainable aviation industry,” she said.

TotalEnergies views SAF as a key part of the strategy to reduce carbon emissions from air travel and align with broader environmental goals.
