Norwegian uses SAF supplied by Moeve for flights from Las Palmas airport in Spain to Nordic countries

Moeve and Norwegian have signed an agreement aimed at reducing carbon emissions in air transport between Spain and the Nordic region through the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), reports Biodiesel Magazine.

As part of the contract, Norwegian used SAF supplied by Moeve for flights departing from Las Palmas airport in Spain to destinations in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark during November and December 2024.

Moeve produces SAF at its La Rábida Energy Park in Huelva, using used cooking oils. These second-generation biofuels can cut CO2 emissions by up to 90% over their entire lifecycle compared to conventional kerosene.

“At Moeve, we agree with the widespread industry view that SAF is the only immediate solution for achieving more sustainable aviation. We are proud to supply SAF permanently at Spain’s major airports, and this latest supply contract with Norwegian is a crucial step in reducing CO2 emissions across the industry,” said Álvaro Macarro, Moeve’s Director of Sustainable Aviation.

Norwegian’s Vice President of Sustainability, Anders Fagernæs, emphasized the importance of SAF in achieving the airline’s environmental targets. “SAF plays a vital role in reaching our target of 45% lower CO2 emissions by 2030. Las Palmas is one of our most popular destinations, and as such is a great location to further our work with SAF. We look forward to the collaboration with Moeve and working toward lowering emissions,” he said.

To ensure a steady supply of SAF, Moeve, along with its partners, is constructing a new production facility with a flexible capacity of 0.5 million metric tons of SAF and renewable diesel. Once operational in 2026, the facility will be part of the largest second-generation biofuels complex in southern Europe.

Moeve aims to become the leading producer of 2G biofuels in Spain and Portugal, targeting an annual production capacity of 2.5 million metric tons of biofuels by 2030. Of this, 800,000 metric tons will be SAF, enough to fuel 2,000 flights around the world.

The agreement aligns with the European Commission’s ‘Fit for 55’ package, which includes the ‘RefuelEU Aviation’ initiative to increase SAF usage in the EU. The targets call for 2% SAF use by 2025, rising to 6% by 2030 and 70% by 2050.

Additionally, the partnership supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
