Work begins on £15.6m anaerobic digestion plant in Dorset

Construction has started on a £15.6 million anaerobic digestion (AD) facility in Dorset, England, which will transform food waste and other organic materials into renewable energy and bio-fertiliser.

This project, the largest in the 29-year history of Eco Sustainable Solutions, is the company’s second AD plant and is located near Parley, Christchurch. The facility will process over 50,000 tonnes of food waste annually, converting it into biomethane, a green gas that will be fed directly into the local gas grid.

Eco Sustainable Solutions is also transitioning its waste transport fleet from diesel to green gas sourced from the new plant, reducing CO2 emissions by 85% compared to diesel.

The facility is expected to generate approximately 60 GWh of biomethane each year, enough to meet the energy needs of 5,300 medium-sized homes. It is anticipated to be fully operational by January 2026, creating five new jobs in the process.

The construction is being handled by Hurn-based Mildren Construction, with funding support from Lombard, the UK’s largest asset finance provider and part of NatWest Group. Lombard contributed £8.715 million to the project.

Henry Bragginton, a relationship manager at Lombard, said, “Eco Sustainable Solutions is committed to creating a sustainable future and encouraging recycling. Supporting their vision with this new AD plant has been a privilege.”

Eco’s financial director, Andy Moore, expressed gratitude for Lombard’s assistance. “Their support and expertise made the complex funding process smooth and hassle-free, ensuring the project moved forward without issues,” he said.
