The BMW Group Plant Steyr, known for over four decades as a production hub for diesel and petrol engines, has transitioned to using renewable energy from a nearby biomass plant for heating. The Austrian facility now exclusively relies on district heating sourced from a nearby biomass plant, marking a significant step toward reducing carbon emissions.
Tanja Hornbachner, the plant’s energy manager, explained that the facility first connected to the local district heating network in 2012 with a long-term goal of cutting CO2 emissions. “This strategic vision has paid off. Since September this year, the Steyr plant has become the first BMW Group facility to operate entirely on renewable energy for its production processes,” she said.
The transition was possible due to a cooperation agreement with the regional energy providers Energie AG Oberösterreich Erzeugung GmbH and EVN Wärme GmbH. Both companies operate the Fernwärme Steyr biomass power plant, which is less than a kilometre away from the BMW facility.
