BMW Brilliance, a Sino-German joint venture, has made history by becoming the first car manufacturer in China to use green hydrogen trucks for logistics, following the establishment of the region’s first hydrogen refueling station in Shenyang, Liaoning province.
Franz Decker, the company’s president and CEO, remarked, “With the support of governments at all levels, BMW Brilliance has collaborated with local partners to align with China’s hydrogen energy development plan, actively driving innovation in the hydrogen energy sector.”
The automaker has a longstanding commitment to sustainable practices, with its recent exploration of hydrogen logistics being the latest step in that direction.
Hydrogen trucks provide several benefits for logistics, including long range, fast refueling, lightweight design, and zero emissions.
Earlier this year, BMW Brilliance urged its logistics partner, Huatong Logistics, to integrate hydrogen trucks into their operations, thereby generating real demand for the refueling station.
In addition, China Huadian has implemented advanced technology for large-scale green hydrogen production, supplying fuel for the station.
Local officials in Shenyang and the Dadong district have also encouraged the China National Petroleum Corporation to participate in building the hydrogen refueling station.
Decker expressed confidence in the future of green hydrogen energy.
With over 40 years of experience in hydrogen-powered systems, particularly in fuel cell technology, BMW has gained significant expertise and technical advantages. The company also announced plans to introduce its first series production fuel cell electric vehicle in 2028.
