United States: Boston Logan Airport receives first shipment of sustainable aviation fuel

Boston Logan International Airport has received its first barge delivery of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with more than one million gallons arriving this week, WCVB Channel 5 Boston reported.

The fuel is produced from renewable waste materials, including used cooking oil, and does not contain fossil fuels. It can be used in existing aircraft and airport fuelling infrastructure, offering the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%.

Massport, which operates Boston Logan International Airport, said the delivery marked progress in adopting practical solutions to reduce aviation’s environmental impact. The authority noted that decarbonising aviation would take time but described the shipment as a step towards deploying lower-carbon alternatives using existing infrastructure.

The delivery follows a state tax incentive approved in June for Massport. The measure provides incentives of $1.50 to $2 per gallon of sustainable aviation fuel, subject to an overall cap of $10 million.
