Imphal: Manipur recorded 1,363 electric vehicle (EV) registrations between January and October 27, 2026, marking a significant increase in adoption, Northeast Now reported.
Registrations rose 70% year-on-year during the first nine months of 2026 to 1,251 units, compared with 737 vehicles in the corresponding period last year.
Three-wheelers, including passenger autos and goods carriers, accounted for the largest share of the state’s electric vehicle registrations, representing 43% of the total through September. Two-wheelers followed with a 36% share.
Despite the growth, EV penetration in Manipur remained below the national average. Electric vehicles accounted for 4.6% of new vehicle registrations in the state, compared with the national average of 10.7%.
The state ranked 27th among 36 states and Union territories in total EV registrations and 25th among the 28 states in terms of EV market share.
Manipur is also expanding its charging infrastructure, although most existing facilities are concentrated in major urban centres. Imphal has emerged as the main hub, with around 13 public and semi-public charging stations.
Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) has installed several e-Charge facilities equipped with 60 kW CCS2 fast DC chargers at locations across Imphal, including areas near JNIMS Porompat, Manipur University, Lamshang and Malom.
A charging facility has also been set up in the parking area of Imphal International Airport to serve commuters.
